This Bleeding City
A young man trades his university friendships for a London hedge fund job, just before the crash.
Alex Preston’s first novel follows a young graduate who drifts from university into a job at a London hedge fund in the years before the 2008 crash. As the money grows, his friendships and his relationship with the woman he loves come under strain. Preston worked in finance himself, and he portrays the City from the inside.

This is by a banker who is an English literature graduate and has the narrative here that shows what it was like to be in the thick of it, on the frontline, during the credit crunch, what it was like on the inside. But, more than that, it’s a good book because it’s a real proper novel.
