Janie Crawford grows from a voiceless teenager into a woman in charge of her own destiny, in Zora Neale Hurston's Harlem Renaissance classic.

Zora Neale Hurston’s 1937 novel follows Janie Crawford as she tells the story of her life, from a naive teenager to a woman in control of her own destiny. Set in central and southern Florida in the early twentieth century, it traces her three marriages and her search for a voice of her own. Hurston wrote it in Haiti in seven weeks, and it is now considered a classic of the Harlem Renaissance and her best-known work.

Historian & Author

This novel, the masterwork of anti-racist fiction, innovatively explores the precarious love life of a Southern black woman wrestling sexism, racism, and, ultimately, poverty. Hurston portrays black people in all their imperfections and complex diversity, which is what makes them human, and humanly equal to all other racial groups.
