Vogler wrote a seven-page memo at Disney summarising Joseph Campbell’s hero myth for story executives; it circulated widely enough to become this book. He turns the monomyth into a working structure of the ordinary world, the call, the mentor, the ordeal and the return, and into character functions a writer can use. Widely taught, and equally widely blamed for the sameness of studio storytelling.

Vogler adapted the work of Joseph Campbell, an American academic, to the art of screenwriting. Vogler’s approach to screenwriting was based on Campbell’s theory that, because of myths, the arc of a hero’s journey was a story ingrained deeply inside all of us. I really incorporated his ideas and techniques into how I structured films—I referred to it a lot.
