Bangkok after the oil, where calories are the currency and agribusiness owns the seed stock. Anderson Lake runs a factory that is a front for hunting the last uncontaminated genes; Emiko is a Japanese-built engineered human, abandoned by her owner and treated as property by everyone else. Bacigalupi worked out the economics of a de-industrialised tropics in unusual detail, and the result won both the Hugo and the Nebula.
