The Viceroys
Federico De Roberto's 1894 novel of a noble Sicilian family in the years of Italian unification, in Archibald Colquhoun's translation, published by Verso in 2016.
The Viceroys (I VicerĂ©) is an 1894 novel by Federico De Roberto, regarded as a major work of Italian realism. Set in Sicily, it follows three generations of the Uzeda family, nobles of Catania, from 1855 to 1882 as unification reshapes society. It influenced Pirandello and Lampedusa’s The Leopard. Dacia Maraini calls it a big, strong novel and notes De Roberto’s interest in the destiny of women. Archibald Colquhoun’s translation dates from 1962.
