The Terror

Dan Simmons · 2018

Dan Simmons's 2007 novel of a doomed Arctic expedition and the creature that hunts its crew.

Simmons fictionalises Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition aboard HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, sent in 1845 to find the Northwest Passage. Starvation, illness, mutiny and cannibalism beset the crew, who are also stalked across the ice by a monster. Most of the characters are real members of the expedition. The book was nominated for the British Fantasy Award in 2008 and adapted for AMC in 2018. Wohlleben prizes it for its picture of polar hardship.
