Ryszard Kapuscinski was the Polish Press Agency’s sole foreign correspondent for much of Africa, Latin America and Asia, and reckoned he lived through twenty-seven revolutions. The title piece concerns the 1969 war between Honduras and El Salvador that ignited around a World Cup qualifier. The book is assembled from dispatches and the notes he could not file, and its accuracy has been debated since, which has not diminished its influence.
