The Shining

Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic and failing writer, takes a job minding the Overlook Hotel through a Colorado winter, bringing his wife and his son Danny, who sees things. The hotel has its own intentions. King has said the novel came out of his own drinking and his fear of what he might do, and that is the pressure under it: the supernatural machinery keeps arriving exactly where a family was already breaking.
