The Score Takes Care of Itself
My Philosophy of Leadership
The legendary NFL coach's leadership philosophy: obsess over the standard of performance and the details, and the wins, the score, will follow on their own.
Bill Walsh took over a San Francisco 49ers team that was the joke of the NFL and, within three years, won a Super Bowl, going on to build a dynasty. His philosophy, written with Steve Jamison and published after his death, is that you should never fixate on the scoreboard. Instead you install an exacting Standard of Performance, down to how players dress and how phones are answered, and trust that if everyone meets the standard, winning follows. It is a leadership classic Jack Dorsey has long pressed on other founders.
