Ramchand works in a sari shop in Amritsar, unrolling cloth for wealthy customers whose lives he sees in fragments, and decides to teach himself English in the hope of becoming someone else. Bajwa’s first novel is precise about the geography of class in an Indian city, and unsparing about how little the effort changes.
