Ridley’s case is that human prosperity comes from exchange and specialisation, that ideas meeting one another is the engine of progress, and that pessimism has been consistently wrong about the future. He marshals a great deal of long-run data on living standards. He is also arguing a position, and the treatment of climate and inequality is where critics push back hardest, so it repays reading alongside its opponents.
