Chang documented the Japanese army massacre of Nanking in 1937, in which hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed, drawing on Chinese survivor accounts, Japanese veterans and the diaries of Westerners who stayed behind. It is credited with forcing the event into Western awareness. The research cost her enormously, which her mother later wrote about.
