The Presocratic Philosophers

A Critical History with a Selection of Texts

G. S. Kirk, J. E. Raven & M. Schofield

The standard scholarly presentation of the Presocratics in English: for each thinker, a critical account of the evidence, followed by the surviving fragments and testimonia in Greek with facing translation. Kirk, Raven and Schofield give their own readings but set out the competing ones fairly, which is what has kept the book in use since 1957. This is the second edition, revised by Malcolm Schofield.
