The Poisonwood Bible

Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of Nathan Price, a rigid Baptist missionary who moves his wife and four daughters to the Belgian Congo in 1959. As the country moves toward independence and upheaval, the family’s certainties collapse. Narrated in turn by the mother and daughters, the novel weaves personal tragedy together with the politics of colonialism, and asks hard questions about faith, guilt, and what outsiders owe the places they try to change.
