The Muqaddimah

Written in 1377 as the introduction to a universal history, and generally treated as the founding text of social science. Ibn Khaldun’s central idea is asabiyyah, the group solidarity that lets a people take power and then dissolves across a few generations of comfort until the next hungry group replaces them. He also writes on economics, taxation, education and the sociology of cities, centuries before those were fields.
