The Mind of South Africa

Allister Sparks

Written in 1990 as apartheid ended and before anyone knew what followed, explaining how the system was built and believed in rather than only what it did.

Sparks was a South African journalist writing in 1990, at the moment apartheid was ending and before anyone knew what would follow. He explains how the system was built and how it was believed in, which most accounts skip in favour of describing what it did. The uncertainty of the moment is preserved in the book, and gives it an angle no later history can have.

This history book actually tries to explain to the reader how things were. Oh such books are so rare! (Why is that?) Definitely recommended, written at the very end of the apartheid era which gives it yet another angle of interest.
