Michael Hudson gets out of a Washington jail because a witness fails to appear, and tries to hold a dishwashing job and the reading habit a prison librarian gave him. The man who arranged the witness’s absence wants payment in kind. Pelecanos writes D.C. as a working city rather than a capital, and the novel is quietly serious about whether books actually change what a person does next.
