The Lover

An unnamed French girl of fifteen, poor and living in colonial Indochina, begins an affair with a wealthy Chinese man twelve years older, watched and tolerated by a family that needs the money. Duras drew on her own adolescence and wrote it at seventy, in fragments that move between first and third person as if the memory keeps changing hands. It won the Prix Goncourt in 1984 and sold in the millions.
