Two couples in the West Country through the freak winter of 1962, when England was buried in snow for months. Miller writes sentences calibrated finely enough that the weather does psychological work: a frozen landscape becomes a mirror for people who cannot say what is wrong. A doctor and his new wife, a farmer and his, and four interiors that will not survive the thaw intact.

It is such an elegantly written novel, with sentences so finely calibrated that Miller’s descriptions are infused with psychological weight. The effect is so successful that for instance, the descriptions of the weather transform a frozen landscape into a mirror of his characters’ inner lives.
