The House on the Borderland

William Hope Hodgson

A recluse's manuscript records swine-things besieging his house and a vision of the death of the solar system.

Two travellers in rural Ireland find a manuscript in the ruins of a house. It records an old recluse besieged by swine-like creatures from a pit below, and then something stranger: a vision that carries him forward through the death of the sun and the end of the solar system. Published in 1908, it helped invent cosmic horror. Guillermo del Toro calls it a summit of cosmic horror, adored by Lovecraft, and scary, disturbing and magical.
