The House of Eve

Two women in the 1950s: Ruby in Philadelphia, working toward a scholarship that a pregnancy would end, and Eleanor in Washington, marrying into a Black upper class that measures her by her skin and her family. Johnson braids them toward a collision, and is specific about the maternity homes and closed adoptions of the period. Sharp on colourism and class inside Black communities, which fiction of this era rarely handles this directly.
