The History of White People

Nell Irvin Painter traces the idea of whiteness from classical antiquity through eighteenth-century race science, American immigration panics and the successive enlargements of who counted as white. The argument is that the category was repeatedly invented and re-invented to suit circumstance, and one of the book’s surprises is how much of the evidence is art historical, sitting in busts, paintings and physiognomic drawings.
