The Good Soldier

Ford Madox Ford · 1915

Two perfect marriages recounted by the one person least equipped to understand either.

John Dowell narrates the story of two apparently ideal couples, the Dowells and the Ashburnhams, and takes the whole novel to work out what was happening in front of him for nine years. Ford called it a tale of passion and constructed it so the reader assembles the chronology faster than the narrator does. Published in 1915, it is one of the founding texts of unreliable narration in English.

The Good Soldier is the most intriguing book I've ever read. On the surface, it's a novel about two couples who share similar traits and who have seemingly perfect marriages.
