A boy pays Nero Wolfe a few dollars to investigate a woman he saw signalling from a car, and is killed almost immediately, which offends Wolfe enough to take the case seriously. Stout wrote more than seventy Wolfe books; this one is the most hard-boiled of them, and the contrast between Wolfe’s orchid-room fastidiousness and Archie Goodwin’s legwork is at its sharpest.
