The Feeling of What Happens
A neuroscientist's case that feeling, not pure thought, is where consciousness begins.
The neuroscientist Antonio Damasio argues that consciousness is rooted in the body and its emotions. He distinguishes a core self, built moment to moment from the body’s feelings, from an autobiographical self that carries our memories and our story. Drawing on patients with brain damage, he shows how emotion underpins reason and awareness.
