The Dictionary of Lost Words
A girl raised beneath the making of the Oxford English Dictionary collects the words its editors threw away.
Esme grows up under the table where the Oxford English Dictionary is being assembled, and starts collecting the slips of paper the lexicographers discard. What she saves turns out to be mostly women’s words, and words for things men of that class had no use for. Williams builds a quiet argument about whose language gets recorded as language, set against the suffrage movement and the First World War.
