In 1994 Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse, then fifteen, was smuggled out of Butare in a humanitarian convoy, hidden in a sack. Thirty years later she set out to find the people who ran that convoy, the footage shot from those vehicles, and the other children who survived it. The result is part memoir, part investigation into how the Rwandan genocide was recorded by outsiders and how little of that record belongs to the people who lived it.
