The Complete Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham

W. Somerset Maugham · 1951

Scandal and murder in the colonial Far East, recounted over a nightcap by a narrator who knew everyone.

Maugham wrote short stories for fifty years, many set among the British in Malaya, Borneo and the South Seas, and most turning on someone’s respectable surface giving way. The framing device is usually a narrator being told the story over a drink, which lets him withhold judgement while arranging the evidence. This edition collects them in full.

Maugham was famous for his novels and plays, but I love his short stories best. He often uses a narrator drinking a nightcap at a men's club, recounting a recent scandalous tale of adultery or murder set in the morally questionable British Far Eastern colonies.
