The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain

Mark Twain

Sixty stories that start as frontier comedy and end somewhere considerably darker.

Sixty stories spanning Twain’s whole career, from the frontier tall tale that made his name, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, to the late, bleak work like The Mysterious Stranger. The range is the surprise: the same writer produced broad comic sketches and some genuinely savage moral fables. Charles Neider’s edition arranges them chronologically, so the darkening is visible as you read.

Jeffrey Archer

Novelist

Mark Twain is, of course, a genius. His short stories are probably better than his novels, and his quips are probably even better than his short stories. His wonderful comment about how “when I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished by how much he’d learned in seven years” is just brilliant.
