Walt Longmire, sheriff of a thinly populated Wyoming county, investigates the killing of a young man who had been convicted of raping a Cheyenne girl and served almost no time, while other names from the case start turning up dead. Johnson’s first novel introduced Henry Standing Bear and the landscape that carries the series, and it became the basis for the television adaptation.
