A boy at a bleak boarding school is befriended by an old woman who tells him about Bertie, who grew up in Africa and raised an orphaned white lion cub, and about what happened when the two were separated. Morpurgo builds the story from a real lion carved into a Wiltshire hillside, and it won the Smarties Book Prize in 1996.
