The Brothers Grimm: A Biography
The Grimms collected their fairy tales mostly as a by-product of inventing modern German philology.
Ann Schmiesing follows Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm through the scholarship, politics and family difficulty of their lives, placing the famous tales inside a much larger project of recovering German language and law. The book fills out the German Romantic period considerably for readers who know the brothers only through the stories.
