Michael Connelly's debut introduces LAPD detective Harry Bosch, whose look into a fellow veteran's death uncovers a plan to rob a bank from below.

Michael Connelly’s 1992 debut introduced Harry Bosch, a Los Angeles homicide detective who served as a tunnel rat in the Vietnam War. When a man he fought beside is found dead in a drainpipe, apparently of an overdose, Bosch suspects murder and uncovers a plan tied to a bank robbery carried out through underground tunnels. Connelly, then a crime reporter, drew on real cases, and the book won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel.
