Telling Sexual Stories
Why people tell stories about their sexual lives, and how those stories change communities and politics.
Ken Plummer, a sociologist of sexuality, studies the personal stories people tell about sex: coming out, surviving rape, recovery and more. He asks why such stories come to be told at particular times, how communities form around them and how they change politics. The book treats storytelling as central to how sexual identities are made.

And, as I tried to think through the methodology of doing this book and think about sexuality, Ken Plummer’s book was really helpful. He talks about sexual identity in terms of stories we tell ourselves and share with others. Identity is all about finding the right story for yourself and your experience.
