Junger fought four years on the Western Front, was wounded repeatedly, and published this from his diaries in 1920. It stands apart from the rest of the war literature because he declines to condemn: the horror is recorded precisely, and so is the intensity he found in it. That refusal to draw the expected conclusion is exactly why the book still unsettles readers a century on.
