Stones from the River

Ursula Hegi’s novel is set in the fictional German town of Burgdorf and centers on Trudi Montag, a dwarf who works in the library and sees her neighbors clearly precisely because she stands outside their world. Across the two world wars, Trudi watches ordinary people accommodate the rise of Nazism. The book is a close study of difference, complicity, and moral courage in a small community.
