Starling House

Opal is scraping by in a Kentucky coal town that has never recovered, and takes a job cleaning the one house everyone avoids, built by a children’s author whose book still gives the town nightmares. Harrow writes Southern gothic with real class anger underneath: the mine, the company, the water. The house has its own appetite, and the novel is at its best when the haunting and the economics turn out to be the same thing.
