Sourdough
A San Francisco robotics engineer inherits a sourdough starter and finds her way into a whole new world.
Lois Clary is a software engineer at a San Francisco robotics company, coding all day and collapsing at night. When the two brothers who run her neighborhood takeout spot have to leave the country, their last delivery is the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must feed it daily and learn to bake. Robin Sloan’s 2017 novel made the San Francisco Chronicle’s top 100 books of the year. Jeff VanderMeer calls it a satire of the tech industry that is both sweet and savory.

This satire of the tech industry manages to be both sweet and savory, in telling the story of a woman who inherits the possibly sentient starter for a sourdough recipe. More fairy tale than incisive critique, Sourdough epitomizes the heart-warming story that isn't saccharine and as such it's a rare novel indeed in a landscape dominated by more weighty books.
