Shutter Island
Dennis Lehane's 2003 thriller about a U.S. Marshal sent to a hospital for the criminally insane, in the William Morrow paperback.
Dennis Lehane wrote Shutter Island as an homage to Gothic settings, B movies and pulp. Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshal, and his partner Chuck Aule go to Ashcliffe Hospital to look for an escaped patient and find its treatments pushing them toward madness. Anders Roslund calls it the best non-Swedish crime book he has read, citing characters he believes in, good writing and an ending he did not see coming.
