Tommy Wilhelm has lost his job, separated from his wife, and staked what money remains on a commodities tip from a man he has no reason to trust. Bellow compresses the whole novella into a single day on New York’s Upper West Side, most of it spent in the company of a father who will not help him. It is a short book about the exact moment a life stops being retrievable, and it closes on one of the strangest and most moving final scenes in American fiction.
