Second Place
A woman invites a famous painter to her marshland guest house and regrets it almost at once.
M invites a celebrated painter to stay in the guest house on the marsh where she lives with her husband, hoping he will show her something about her own life, and he arrives with a younger woman and a talent for cruelty. Cusk based the structure on Mabel Dodge Luhan’s memoir of hosting D.H. Lawrence, and the novel is a study of what one person can want from another’s attention.
