Alvin Schwartz collected American folk horror, campfire tales, urban legends and creepy rhymes, and retold them for young readers. What made the books legendary was Stephen Gammell’s artwork: smeared, bleeding, half-dissolved figures that terrified a generation and got the series banned from libraries. Guillermo del Toro, who produced the film adaptation, notes it is allegedly a young-adult retelling of campfire tales while calling Gammell’s art scary as hell.
