Red Dust

A Path Through China

Ma Jian · 2006

Ma Jian's fictionalised account of his journey through China in the 1980s, translated by Flora Drew.

In 1983 Ma Jian’s paintings were denounced during the Anti-Spiritual Pollution Campaign and he was placed in detention. After his release he resigned from his job and set off on a three-year journey through China, selling his paintings and stories as he went. Red Dust is his fictionalised account of that journey. He wrote it after moving to London in 1999, and it won the 2002 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award.
