Geoffrey Wolff sets a crime novel in Providence in the 1980s, before the city’s much-publicised revival, and populates it with a dying lawyer, a cop, a thief and a hospital orderly whose lives converge. The plot moves, but Wolff’s real interest is the texture of the place, and the book is often cited as the best novel written about Rhode Island.
