Matthew Desmond argues that the United States has more poverty than any other advanced democracy not by accident but by design: because affluent Americans benefit from cheap labour, exploitative rents, and a tax code that subsidises them far more generously than it does the poor. He wrote it after Evicted, and it is deliberately shorter, angrier, and addressed to the reader as a participant rather than an observer.
