Packaging Girlhood
Two psychologists decode what marketers sell to girls, and how parents can help their daughters see through it.
Psychologists Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown look at how girls from about three to their late teens are marketed to through clothes, toys, books, music and television. They find a narrow set of roles on offer, centred on looks and shopping, and give parents ways to talk with their daughters about these messages without lecturing them.
