One Long Night

Andrea Pitzer traces the concentration camp as a specific invention, beginning with Spanish reconcentracion in Cuba in the 1890s, through the British camps in South Africa, the Soviet and Nazi systems, and on to the present. The argument is that the camp is a recurring technology of the modern state rather than an aberration of one regime, and the research is patient enough that the pattern does the arguing.
