Nightingale’s Song
Five Annapolis graduates, including John McCain, and the war that shaped all of them.
Robert Timberg, himself a Naval Academy graduate badly burned in Vietnam, follows five Annapolis men through the war and its long political aftermath: John McCain, James Webb, Oliver North, Robert McFarlane and John Poindexter. Three of them ended up entangled in Iran-Contra. The argument is that Vietnam split a generation of American leadership along a line that ran through the academy itself.
