Music for Chameleons

Truman Capote · 1980

Late Capote: stories, a novella and a day spent with Marilyn Monroe.

Capote’s last book collects short fiction, a novella-length true crime piece called Handcarved Coffins, and a set of conversational portraits including a day at Coney Island with Marilyn Monroe. He was in decline when it appeared in 1980 and the collection is uneven, but the Monroe piece is among the best things he wrote.

I love his Southern, almost surreal sensibility in his early short stories, as well as the portraits, such as "A Beautiful Child," about a day spent with his friend Marilyn Monroe.
