Jack Crabb, aged 111, dictates his account of having been raised by Cheyenne after a massacre, and of moving back and forth across the frontier ever since: gunfighter, drunk, muleskinner, and the only white survivor of Little Bighorn. Berger’s 1964 novel treats the mythology of the American West as something to be told by a magnificently unreliable narrator, and it is very funny without ever letting the reader forget what was actually done.
